Martin Bulmer is Professor of Sociology at the University
of Surrey, and Director of the Survey Link Scheme. He is
also the Director of the ESRC Question Bank. He was
previously professor of sociology at the University of
Southampton, 1993-1995, and before that taught at LSE
for seventeen years in the Department of Social Science
and Administration. He has also been a member of the
Government Statistical Service and a visiting professor of sociology at the University of Chicago. He is also a Director of the department's Institute of Social Research, and an Academician of the Academy of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences.
His research interests cover the methodology of social research, the history of the social sciences, the study of ethnicity and race, the application of sociology to public policy, and the sociology of social care. He has taken part in an ESRC-funded project on the problems of making electronic questionnaires in CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing), which are administered from a lap-top computer, intelligible when translated into a paper equivalent, for display in a setting such as the Question Bank. His most recent publication is as editor of Questionnaires (Sage Benchmarks in Social Research Methods, 2004).
Tom Daly, SLS Outreach Officer

"After retiring from the National Audit Office, Tom has undertaken a number of projects within the University of Surrey Psychology and Sociology Departments. He joined the Department of Sociology full time in April 2000 and since then has undertaken research as part of the ESRC Growing Older Programme - Older Men: their social worlds and healthy lifestyles - and a Nuffield Foundation study - Older People and their families: Autonomy and Decision - Making in later Life. He has just completed a project on Older Men on behalf of SSMR for AGE CONCERN. He joined the ESRC Survey Link Scheme in January 2005 as Outreach Officer Liaison Officer with the task of developing closer ties between the Scheme and the academic community - researchers, teachers and postgraduates."

Julie worked closely with the SLS team producing the web
pages and teaching workshop participants about the
Question bank and CAPI.
Julie joined the Sociology department in 2001 to manage
the contents of the Question Bank www resource. Managing
the survey side of the Qb, Julie has particular experience of
researching a wide range of surveys on the Internet as well as
liaising with the main survey producing organizations in the UK and writing for the web. Julie completed her Msc in Social Research in 2005.
