SEARCH HELP

What is being searched?

The text from questions used in a selection of key, recent (and mainly) UK social surveys. The surveys covered by this search are those found in the ESDS Nesstar catalogue. Note that the list of surveys covered is not as comprehensive as those included in our questionnaire search.

About the results

Click on the Access full detail link to see the survey response (frequency counts), links to the previous and next question, links to the question in the context of its native questionnaire, links to the same question in other surveys, a link to ICPSR's question database and a link to access the full survey dataset via the ESDS.

On the full detail page, in a small number of cases, the link to Access full survey dataset will take you to a teaching or sampler version of the main survey dataset.

Sometimes the link to View this question in original questionnaire(s) Beta will bring back no results and other times it may return several hits. This happens because the search is looking for the variable name for the question within all the questionnaires for that survey series. Where the questionnaire does not include annotated variable names alongside the question, no hits are returned.

Tips for question text

AND OR

If you do not specify an operator between search terms, AND (all operators are in capital letters, i.e., not And or and) will be used by default.

  • death penalty will find all questions that contain "death" and "penalty".
  • death OR penalty will find all questions that contain "death" and / or "penalty".

NOT

Precede your search term with NOT (capital letters) to exclude questions that contain that word.

  • trust NOT national will provide a list of questions where "trust" is included but not "national".
  • Remember that trust not national will find all questions that contain "trust", "not" and "national" - "not" has not been put in capital letters here and so it will be searched for.
  • More complex uses of NOT are supported. For example, trust NOT "unit trust" NOT "charitable trust" NOT "NHS trust" searches for "trust" but excludes questions where the phrases between "" appear.
Tips for all search fields

Phrases

Find a phrase by surrounding multiple words in quotes.

  • "people can be trusted" will find questions that contain those four words together in that order.
  • When searching for questions within particular surveys - i.e., using the Survey series field - use (for example) "british social attitudes" rather than british social attitudes.

Wildcards

Match for words that contain 0 or more characters after the search term (note that wildcards cannot appear at the beginning of a search term).

  • * matches 0 or more characters of any kind.
  • atmosp* will find all questions that contain those characters, e.g., "atmosphere", "atmospheric", etc.
